The Giving Tree Project showcases the literature of Shel Silverstein through music and theatre. The group was created for two main reasons: 1) To share the meaningful work of Shel Silverstein with children and adults of the community and 2) to raise money for Project Acorn, which provides financial assistance to low-income families so that they may send their children to preschool. 100% of the money raised by The Giving Tree will be donated to Project Acorn. .. ****Thanks to all those who came out to the Warehouse on the 25th of January, we raised more then $650!!!!*****.. ..Live at the Warehouse 01.25.07...... .. .. .. .. .. .. ......Add to My Profile.. | .. "The people united will never be defeated." .. .. .. ..Project Acorn.......... .. ..Project Acorn was founded in 1995 to help families in need send their 3 or 4-year old children to preschool. Studies have demonstrated that early childhood education affects everything in a child's life: intellectual development, self-confidence, and even future earning potential. It helps our children grow into responsible and fulfilled adults. .. Founded in 1995, Project Acorn recognizes the long-term impact that early childhood education has on the character of our community. Project Acorn is dedicated to seeding an enhanced educational beginning. We provide funding for children whose parents have a commitment to education, but need financial assistance to obtain a quality preschool program. .. ..2004-2005 Statistics.. .. 67 Total Students .. 30 - 3 year olds 37 - 4 year olds .. 54% Single parent household .. Average Income was $27,300 .. Family Background 45% Hispanic 27% Caucasian 21% African American 7% Asian & Other .. ..The Case for Universal Pre-School .. ..Studies are continually finding out how critical early childhood education is for the development of children. However, because pre-school in the United States is not universal, many kids are faced with inequalities as soon they enter kindergarten due to socioeconomic adversities. In response, some states ignore it, other states have developed programs to help lower income families send their kids to pre-school. Unfortunately, the system is littered with deep cracks. What happens when a families income is $27,000, and they don't qualify for a program like Head Start because you have to make less then $19,000 to be considered? When that kid enters kindergarten he won't be nearly as prepared as the kids who went to pre-school are. Research has shown that not only will that disadvantage be felt in school, but outside of school as well. .. ..$9,862.. = The national average tuition for full day of pre-school.. ..$23,535.. = The national average income per household member .. ..
